Leslie Torres, 23, was walking on West 46th Street near 8th Avenue when she was attacked by Jaheem Warren, 33, of Prospect Park, on Tuesday, Oct. 29 around 1:35 p.m., according to NBC and the NYPD.
Torres was left unconscious on the sidewalk in front of the Riu Plaza New York Times Square Hotel, NBC says.
Torres, who lived on West 45th Street, was in critical condition when she arrived at Mount Sinai West, and she died on Monday, Nov. 4, the NYPD said.
Following an investigation, Warren was arrested on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the Midtown North Precinct.
Warren now faces multiple charges, including two counts of second-degree murder, first- and second-degree strangulation, and first- and second-degree assault. The attack is believed to have been completely random.
Records show that Warren was released from New Jersey State Prison in November 2023, where he had served time following charges of drug possession and money laundering.
The NYPD continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Torres's death and is urging anyone with additional information to contact their Crime Stoppers hotline.
